Our Commitment to Access and Inclusion

Capitol City Cottage is a historic 1885 high-water bungalow located within Sacramento’s original city grid. As stewards of this space, we are committed to fostering an environment that is welcoming and inclusive for all guests, visitors, and collaborators.

Because the cottage is listed on Sacramento’s historic register, its original elevated high-water design—with stair access at the front, side, and rear—cannot be structurally altered without compromising its integrity. As a result, the interior of the cottage is not wheelchair accessible, and access to the indoor restroom requires use of stairs.

Event Space Accessibility

All outdoor event spaces at Capitol City Cottage—including the courtyard and garden terrace—are located at ground level on a smooth, single-surface concrete patio, providing accessible paths for most guests. These outdoor spaces can accommodate a variety of setups for seated dinners, workshops, and small gatherings.

Event hosts are responsible for arranging any necessary accessibility accommodations, such as portable wheelchair lifts, ramps, or ADA-compliant portable restrooms, with advance notice. We are happy to assist hosts in identifying local vendors and ensuring the layout of the event supports comfort and inclusion for all attendees.

Acknowledgment and Stewardship

We acknowledge the limitations of our historic structure and understand that true inclusion extends beyond compliance. As stewards of this space, we take responsibility for being transparent about these challenges and for collaborating with event hosts to make every reasonable effort to accommodate guests’ needs.

Our goal is to ensure that everyone who wishes to experience Capitol City Cottage—whether attending a gathering, a workshop, or simply visiting—can do so with dignity and care.

Digital Accessibility

Our website is designed with accessibility in mind and follows WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards where feasible. We continue to improve usability for all visitors, including those using assistive technologies.

If you encounter any barriers on our website or would like to discuss accessibility options for an upcoming event, please contact us.

Ongoing Commitment

Accessibility is an ongoing conversation. While our historic designation imposes permanent structural limits, our commitment to hospitality and inclusion is active and enduring. With notice, we will work alongside hosts and guests to identify the best available solutions to ensure everyone feels welcome here.
